What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G.A.D)

 
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G.A.D) is one of the most common and widespread form of anxiety disorder. It is a condition where a person experiences persistent and excessive anxiety (worry). The anxiety can surround a variety of circumstances. It does not matter how large or small the matter(s) may be. G.A.D can be confused with other types of anxiety such as social anxiety disorder or panic disorder. The symptoms of G.A.D are not limited to one circumstance and can extend into many aspects of a person’s life.

Living with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G.A.D)

People living with G.A.D experience numerous common physical and psychological symptoms. Symptoms can include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, nausea, dizziness and, muscle tension. This can also be accompanied with feelings of helplessness and being extremely overwhelmed. Individuals may also have thoughts that are difficult to control. Spiraling worries that seem unmanageable is also very common. The anxiety may cause the person to lose sleep, feel fatigued, become irritable and unfocused. People struggling with anxiety may also neglect responsibilities and avoid certain situations.
 
Additionally, those with GAD may become consumed by thoughts of hypothetical possibilities. They may also develop compulsive rituals. Constantly double checking that they have locked the door or washing their hands until they feel “clean” are two examples. Over time these behaviors can become more extreme and actually make a person’s life unmanageable. They may focus on avoiding worst-case scenarios instead of being able to manage everyday life effectively.
 

What caused Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G.A.D)

The causes of G.A.D can vary, but there does seem to be a genetic component to the disorder. It is likely that people with a family history of mental health issues may be more likely to suffer from GAD. Individuals with backgrounds of severe stress due to traumatic life events are more prone to G.A.D. Other possible causes of G.A.D include:

How to treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G.A.D)

There is no definite cure for generalized anxiety disorder. However, there are a variety of treatments available. Treatment all depends on the individual’s needs and resources. These include both prescription and non-prescription medications. Talk therapy, lifestyle changes, and natural support systems like support groups help tremendously. Patience, treatment, and support can lead to recovery and renewed hope.
