#2cents: Why I am disturbed by Sia’s “Chandelier” video.
We live in an age where sex is literally everywhere. The world doesn’t seem to be as childproof as it once was. Between the child murders, school shootings, and trafficking; it is obvious to see that our future is targeted. We must protect our children. After watching a video from Australian songstress, Sia for the single “Chandelier” early this morning on VH1, I found myself disturbed by the display of “art” that this video was supposed to be.
“Chandelier” is a song by Australian recording artist Sia from her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear (2014). Written by Sia andJesse Shatkin and produced by Shatkin and Greg Kurstin, the song was released on 17 March 2014 as the lead single from the album. It is an electropop song, featuring electronica, R&B and reggae influences. Lyrically, the song has a melancholic theme, detailing the demoralisation and rationalisation of alcoholism through the typical thought process of a “party girl”.

I guess I was watching a totally different video because I failed to see what Wikipedia is talking about… Judge below for yourself.
I’m sorry but I don’t see the “art” in a child doing ballet alone in a creepy looking apartment in a nude colored leotard. Hell, all she needed was two dots on her chest for nipples and—->THERE YOU GO!!! Watching this video is extremely uncomfortable and hard to sit through. It’s not because of the song or even the video concept, the song is fine. It’s the fact that this 11-year-old (Maddie Zeigler) is doing this dramatic dance sequence and she looks naked. When you wear a nude color , the goal is to look naked, hence the word “nude” . Naked means= We can see your privates (yes, I had to break it down like that) …Why would you put a tight fitting nude leotard on an undeveloped girl and have her run around dancing and doing splits everywhere? This makes me think that you are trying to give the illusion that she is naked. Why on earth would you do that to an 11-year-old little girl?
The video is suppose to depict a juvenile Sia. The blond wig gives the obvious away. It’s crazy because, this video has been out since March of 2014 and people have been praising it left and right. Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable watching this little girl prance around looking naked. I couldn’t focus so much on her dance movements because I was in such shock. Who in their right mind condones this? Is it fair to call this art or exploitation?
Please feel free to comment….
You put it perfectly. I was equally disturbed by this. The way I see it is if that were a little boy there is no way he would be wearing that. Because she’s a girl she is subject to sexualise? Its sick. She’s a child and should have never been depictedin this way. They could have just as easily put her in a black leotard.
