Lincoln Heights

This was another great sitcom that I didn’t get into until after it was cancelled. Lincoln Height aired on ABC Family from  2006 to 2011. This show was groundbreaking on so many levels.  There was really no issue that wasn’t uncovered. The Suttons, are your typical black middle class family.  A family with both parent that actively raise their children against all of the odds in their surrounding environment, Lincoln Heights or “The Height”. The father, Eddie Sutton is an Officer for Lincoln Heights PD and the mother, Jennifer Sutton is a registered nurse. What I love about the Suttons is that they represent a part of black America that isn’t exposed much on television. We’re used to seeing a single parent household or a broken home. Outside of the Huxtables, there aren’t many families like this on television. The Suttons are like the Huxtables but just a little more real. They are real without perpetuating stereotypes. They aren’t poor nor wealthy. Both of the parents work and they live in one of  the  roughest hoods in America.

The only thing that I hate is that I am just now getting into the show and that was honestly by accident. I stumbled across this sitcom on Netflix one day. I was bored out of my mind and ready to click on anything that looked remotely interesting. After watching the first episode, I was hooked. I went on to complete all 4 seasons in that same week.  The Suttons are a black family but this just isn’t a “black show”. Lincoln Heights is a very diverse community. One that is plagued with all kinds of crime and violence.  The goal is to clean up the neighborhood and make it safer for everyone.   In this series, we literally watch an ethnically diverse community come together and take their streets back. From season 1 to season 4, Lincoln Heights shows this beautiful and sometimes tumultuous transition.

Television needs more programming like this…
